The ceremonies are all similar but each of the graduating students are all individuals with the hopes and dreams that their future may hold. On May 19th Belleville East High School Class of 2009 will graduate hundreds of students, each taking their turn to cross the stage to receive their diploma. Among all the students crossing that stage will be Andrew, a former Little in our program.
At 7 years old, Andrew was matched with a Big Brother named Roger. They both enjoy reading and Roger spent extra time with Andrew by encouraging and helping Andrew to excel in school. Although Andrew had a few obstacles to overcome, Roger knew that Andrew was going to make it. You see, Andrew had some physical challenges with his hearing and he often he struggled to keep up with his school work. But with Roger, his mother and stepfather cheering him on, Andrew excelled in school and made the honor roll on several occasions. Andrew, who will embrace a new world on May 19th, loves school and learning...as long as it's a challenge. Andrew will be able to continue loving school. With the help of his Big Brother Roger, Andrew applied for and received several scholarships. He will major in Information Systems and Business at Maryville University in St. Louis. Andrew took seriously the lessons he learned from Roger. He is a leader within his church as a youth mentor and camp counselor. We are proud that he is a member of the graduating "Class of 2009"!
