Nationwide Independent Study
Big Brothers Big Sisters' mentoring programs were evaluated in a nationwide study conducted by Public/Private Ventures, a Philadelphia-based independent research firm. The study focused on children in Big Brother Big Sister mentoring relationships for one year and compared them to a group of their peers without mentors. The study concluded that Little Brothers and Little Sisters were:
- 46% less likely to begin using drugs
- 27% less likely to begin using alcohol (African American teens were 70% less likely to begin using alcohol)
- 52% less likely to skip school
- 33% less likely to hit someone
- Increased their confidence in schoolwork performance
- Developed better relationships with their family members
Local Outcome Statistics
Locally, our agency gathers data annually through program outcome evaluations completed by teachers, parents and volunteers. 72% of matched youth in our program increased in the areas of school performance, staying in school, and avoiding drug and alcohol usage.
School-Based Mentoring Outcomes
Our school-based mentoring program offers community, business and high school volunteers the opportunity to act as role models in local schools. These volunteers work with children in helping them learn life skills, such as problem solving, decision making and conflict resolution. Outcome evaluations show that these youth expand their skill base, decrease truancy and increase in self-confidence.
